Leadership is a decision. Not a role.

For more years than I can count, leadership has been displayed as a title rather than a choice. The system plays a strenuous role and often compromises the ability of the person in that position to execute at their best.

We see it too often. We give someone a task, and when they can't keep up, we get burned because the fire melting the candle has been carried too long, causing the wax to spill on everyone around them.

We need to do away with the candle. And finally get our lights.

The kind that comes on when you walk in the room. So that when you arrive, the light stays on. That is leadership. The decision to turn on the light when you show up , so we no longer have to worry about hot wax spilling on us, and we can actually see where we're going.

Leadership is the decision to ensure that everyone who walks in knows where they're going, and if they don't, you show them the way. Not point in the direction. Take them on the journey.

I've seen the other kind too. People given titles who then behaved differently, never knowing where they were going. Always carrying the candle. Can you imagine being asked to follow someone down a dark road with only a candle, and then they trip and drop it? Or the wax runs out completely? Or worse, they're so focused on their own narrow view that they spill hot wax on everyone walking beside them?

What a disaster.

Here's what I know: a true leader doesn't need to know exactly how to get there in the beginning. They just need to move with purpose and intention, developing ideas along the way, asking the people around them what they have to contribute, knowing when to pause and brainstorm together.

That's a leader.

True leaders don't leave people behind. They don't lose faith in those they're responsible for. They carry the light not for themselves, but for everyone who shows up.

You don't need to know exactly where we're going. But you have to see a place worth going and find a way to get us there safely.

That's leadership. That's the decision.
