Never in a million years would I have guessed I'd be back in a classroom, standing in front of students, and be called Mr. Sweatte.
Never. If someone would have told me that I would be Mr. Sweatte, an educator, a substitute teacher, an ESL instructor, I would have laughed. But we all know the saying: never say never.
I Was Good at My Job. But My Job Wasn't Good for Me.
For years, I worked in digital marketing and retail leadership. I ran teams. I managed campaigns. I hit metrics. On paper, I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing.
But I'd come home and feel terrible. Because too often, leadership in those spaces meant carrying out someone else's vision, even when that vision stomped on the growth of the people around me. I watched colleagues become so accustomed to being unhappy that they stopped recognizing what happiness even felt like. I looked at their faces and said to myself: something has to change.
Digital marketing taught me a lot. But it also taught me what I didn't want. We cast wide nets, chased metrics, crafted brilliant campaigns, and yet I never truly knew who I was helping. I'd never seen their faces. I'd never looked them in the eyes. And I began to wonder: what kind of impact is this, really?
I didn't want to catch fish. I wanted to build something real.
Then Came the Classroom.
Today, I am Mr. Sweatte, a Warren Hills Regional District substitute teacher and ESL educator. And I say that with more pride than any job title I have ever held.
The students at Warren Hills are the most remarkable young people I have ever encountered. They motivated me in ways I didn't expect.
And when I walk through those hallways, whether at the middle school or the high school, all I hear is my name.
"Mr. Sweatte!! … Mr. Sweatte!! … Mr. Sweatte!!!"

I saw students who needed resilience to push through hard mornings. I saw young people who needed permission to be open about who they are, where they come from, and what they're carrying. I saw the power of ownership, of giving a student agency over their own story. And I saw what happens when a school builds a genuine foundation, one where students feel safe, seen, and supported.
The R.O.O.F. Framework belongs in schools. Not as a program handed down from outside. But as a language..... a school community can own together.
You Were Never Meant to Be Their Permanent Teacher.
Well, that is how you look at a substitute, am I wrong?.. Albeit the original plan was to work for a little while and move on. But you don't run away from amazing people. Not when they're this rare.
I am grateful that Warren Hills accepted me — not just as a substitute, but as someone who genuinely belongs to the community. This isn't about titles. It never was. This is about a decision. A purpose. A culture that I believe in deeply enough that I wanted to contribute to it long after my title changes to something different.
You were never meant to be their permanent teacher. You were meant to be their moment.
And sometimes a moment is exactly what a student needs to change the trajectory of everything.
Warren Hills didn't just give me a classroom.
